RMC director Bob Smytherman talks to News on the Block about how residents in his block have benefited from Yourblockonline.com
Bob lives in a block of 46 flats in West Sussex. The building is run by a self managed residential company and Bob is involved in the management. Just under a year ago Bob played a pivotal role in signing his block up to yourblockonline.com – the free service for people in blocks of flats. “When I first moved here 16 years ago a large number of the residents were elderly, but gradually that situation changed so the residents’ website came along at the right time,” recalls Bob. “It is an invaluable way for them to report things, find out what’s going on and get useful information,” he added.
As an RMC director Bob also has to distribute a large number of documents among residents and has found Yourblockonline to be of great benefit to him in carrying out these responsibilities: “From the directors perspective it’s a great way to manage reports and other important documents such as asbestos reports and fire risk assessments. Documents that we need to distribute and file – without cluttering up my spare room.”
The website couldn’t be easier to set up and maintain. “I have limited experience in managing websites but I must admit I found Yourblockonline easy to operate. I’ve certainly got no qualifications in IT or anything like and I found the whole thing very easy to do and was up and running within hours,” said Bob.
But according to Bob the number one advantage of the website is that the residents in his block now have a quick and effective communication tool, the importance of which cannot be underestimated. “Communications with the residents is undoubtedly the number one benefit of a scheme such as this because good communication between residents is paramount in any block, but particularly for medium-large sized blocks like our own.” ®Å½
