According to the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), only around 18% of surveyors in the UK are women. Whilst this is on the increase the margin is still hugely significant. Rebecca Freeman, Fellow of RICS is taking proactive action in this space and has recently set up a forum specifically for Women In Residential Surveying, a space designed to create collaboration, discussion, support and most importantly the opportunity for growth and retention for women within the industry.

“Having worked in residential surveying now for over 20 years from starting out in the field as a surveyor to senior leadership positions I have felt first hand the challenges still faced at all levels when it comes to firstly attracting women into the industry and secondly retaining women. It became really apparent to me that in order for us to start driving an increase in the percentage of women that work within the industry and indeed progress their careers we needed to first create a unique space, just for women whereby we can begin to engage directly on the opportunity for change”

Rebecca has worked within many roles over the years which has given a vital insight into the vast range of options women now have when it comes to working within the Residential Surveying Industry, many more options are available now than there used to be. The first face to face event, held in Birmingham on the 4th December at RICS is showcasing exactly this whereby Rebecca is bringing a host of women together from across the industry to demonstrate their career journey’s and raise the profile of the additional roles that are actually possible. Victoria Clark, recently elected to RICS Governing Council, Sarah Chalmers-Stevens, Professional Development Director, Hilary Grayson, Director SAVA, Fiona Schweppe Area Asset Risk Valuer, Sirah Parkes, Senior Regional Managing Surveyor and Chair of East Midlands Board and Lucy Bourn, Technical Surveying Manager.

A range of events hosted by Women In Residential Surveying are currently being planned for 2026 to continue to help grow the forum and raise the profile which in turn will hopefully not only help to continue to diversify the residential surveying industry but will encourage more women of the newer generations to consider a career in residential surveying and maybe most importantly of all the aim is to help retain the women we already have.
