The Property Care Association (PCA) is calling on householders to protect their homes by reviewing the credentials of contractors before any work takes place and urging anyone with concerns to check online or telephone for help.

In recent weeks the trade body identified more than 50 companies nationwide that are using its logo without permission and has written to each of them requesting its immediate removal from their marketing materials.

Now, the PCA is urging householders to make sure they verify any claim of membership to ensure they are working with a trusted and audited contractor.

Hannah Clarke is Head of Membership at the PCA. She said: “Our team is at the end of the phone for anyone with concerns, or householders can check if a company is PCA registered on our website.

“Trade body membership signals trust and credibility because businesses need to meet the relevant criteria and adhere to industry standards to join.

“We have had reports of deliberate misuse of our logo and false claims of PCA membership which appear to be designed to make unscrupulous businesses look more professional in order to win work.

“Our members go through a robust application process to ensure they fulfil our requirements.

“They must also undergo regular assessments and audits in order to maintain their status and provide reassurance that consumers are working with a business that has the required expertise.”

The Property Care Association (PCA) is the leading representative organisation for the UK’s building protection industry.

Its skilled and audited membership operates across domestic, commercial and civil sectors in the structural repair, structural waterproofing, wood preservation, damp protection, flood remediation and invasive weed control industries.

Hannah Clarke added: “Our members play a vital role in raising standards, promoting professionalism and giving consumers confidence when choosing a contractor.

“With advances in technology, it has become easier for non-member companies to create the impression that they have attained the same level of professionalism, and it is getting harder for consumers to distinguish between genuine PCA members and imposters.

“If there is any doubt at all, we encourage householders to get in touch and check the credentials of their contractor before agreeing to any work.”

To verify whether a contractor is a member of the PCA, go to: www.property-care.org or telephone 01480 400000.
