A children’s charity in Calderdale has received a £500 donation from Barratt Homes to help enrich the lives of the young people it supports.

The housebuilder’s contribution was made to Together for Looked-after Children (TLC) which, based close to its upcoming Hipperholme development, The Skylarks, seeks to enhance the life chances and enable the educational success of Calderdale’s children in care.

Last year, TLC supported 58 children and young people across the borough. This included 33 children receiving packs of books through the charity’s Letterbox scheme to help with their education, in addition to six individual Enrichment Grants to young people who wanted to develop an interest or talent.

These grants fund tuition, educational visits, music, sport or equipment, and can make a huge difference in a child’s life.

Peter Lister, Chair of Trustees at Together for Looked-after Children, said: “Overall, looked-after children have challenging life chances; however, many do thrive, they enjoy happy and supportive care and move into successful careers and become contributing adults.

“TLC is a small charity but, by working in partnership with Calderdale local authority and generous companies like Barratt Homes, we make a big difference to young lives.

“The £500 from Barratt Homes will enable more young people to receive an Enrichment Grant, or to receive book packs through the Letterbox scheme.”

Looked-after children grow up in a variety of residential and foster homes and have often experienced a difficult start in life including neglect, violence and trauma.

Calderdale has over 300 looked-after children and they receive high quality support through their carers and schools, but it’s often the ‘extras’ which they miss out on, such as going on a trip, buying a musical instrument or receiving extra tuition. The valuable work of TLC can help to fill that gap.

The charity works hard to ensure that any funds raised go directly to those children who most need its support.

Gavin Birch, Managing Director at Barratt Homes Yorkshire West, said: “Investing in the lives of children and enhancing their prospects is one of the greatest gifts, and Together for Looked-after Children supports this daily.

“We are thrilled to support this fantastic charity and hope it can continue to enrich the lives of looked-after children in Calderdale for years to come.”
