Firefighters were called to a fire at a high-rise block of flats in Chadwell St Mary, Essex late on Wednesday evening.

Emergency services attended the incident on Godman Road at 10.05pm on Wednesday, January 21, after reports of a fire inside the building. On arrival, crews confirmed there was a fire within a flat on the fifth floor of the 13-storey residential block.

Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus entered the affected flat and located the source of the blaze. Crews worked swiftly to bring the fire under control, successfully extinguishing it by 10.55pm, less than an hour after the initial call was made.

Residents were advised to remain in their homes while crews dealt with the incident, allowing firefighters to access the affected property quickly and safely.

A fire investigation will now be carried out to establish the cause of the blaze.

Station Manager Russ Freeman praised residents for following safety guidance, saying:
“Thank you to all the residents who followed the stay-put policy within the building. This enabled crews to gain access to the flat quickly and bring the fire under control as soon as possible.

“Firefighters will remain at the scene for a short time to make the area safe and check in with residents. A full fire investigation will take place tomorrow.”
