In line with International Women’s Day (8th March), Barratt and David Wilson Homes North East is putting the spotlight on its new Managing Director, Jo Ainsley.

Middlesborough born, Jo brings more than 18 years of experience in the construction industry, including work at Taylor Wimpey and Vistry.

Jo is now an ambassador for the leading developer, supporting the divisional directors to uphold the core principles of Barratt and David Wilson Homes as a responsible housebuilder.

Jo said: “I’m thrilled to have started my role as Managing Director at Barratt and David Wilson Homes North East, the biggest housebuilder in the country. I hope I can help the division continue to grow, retain its five-star reputation and create communities that people are proud to call home.

“No two days are the same in this role. I can be out on site one day, supporting the land buying team another, or opening new show homes. Whatever department I might be supporting, I most enjoy building teams and giving people an opportunity to thrive.”

The developer builds much-needed new homes across its operational areas of Tyne and Wear, Northumberland, County Durham and North Yorkshire.

When asked about her views on female representation in the construction industry, Jo said: “I never really thought about a career in construction when growing up, it just wasn’t something that was highlighted at school. I think the industry is underrepresented as a whole and we’re facing a skills shortage. People aren’t often aware of the opportunities and great careers available.

“Barratt and David Wilson Homes is committed to keep active engagement with schools and colleges to make children aware at a younger age of opportunities. We need more female role models in the industry to be visible. It’s a fact the industry is male dominated, but this has never been a blocker for me to succeed.

“I’m from a working-class background and worked to support myself through university and continue to be a carer for my little boy who is disabled. I want people to see that if I can do it, anyone can. It just takes a lot of hard work and to always back yourself.”

Whilst the number of female construction workers has increased steadily in recent years, the proportion of women in the industry is still significantly lower, something which the housebuilder is keen to change.

According to CIOB, women make up 15% of the UK construction industry, with approximately 2% working on-site.

With a number of female employees already in a range of roles across the company, the housebuilder is reminding women from all skill sets of the different roles available and is encouraging them to put their experience to the industry.

Some roles within the industry include those based on site, such as Electricians, Plasterers, Engineers, Forklift Drivers, Scaffolders, Bricklayers, Sales Advisers, Site Managers and Contracts Managers.

For those at head office, roles include Architectural Technicians, Surveyors, Engineers, Land and Planning Managers, Estimators, Buyers, and Accountants.
