In pursuit of that rock hard looking 'six-pack', it is important to realise that performing a thousand sit ups and abdominal crunches alone each day won't ultimately guarantee a flat mid-section. However, it is vital to include specific abdominal exercises (crunches), which help to strengthen and tone this area. It is equally important to include aerobic exercise, which not only increases one's overall fitness levels, but burns body fat. The stomach muscles, like most other areas of our body, are covered with a layer of bodyfat. One cannot 'sit up' or 'crunch' away this fat, so fat burning through aerobic exercise is essential. Therefore, combining variations of crunches and adequate aerobic exercise as well as following a sensible, low fat eating plan should help to attain a flat, well defined mid-section. Stick with it for a couple of months and you'll soon see some positive and tangible changes. Good luck. Cornel Chin, the NOTB personal trainer
