Project managers based in the capital of North Korea, Pyongyang are reported to have taken extreme measures to ensure their workers complete construction projects on time.
Radio Free Asia claims the workers are being supplied with methamphetamines, also known as ‘meth’ or ‘ice’, to increase the work rate.
Sources say there is severe pressure to meet deadlines and complete projects before winter, as thousands of workers were hired for the redevelopment schemes.
This will include more than 60 structures and a 70-storey high-rise apartment complex, all of which have been commissioned by the North Korean supreme leader, Kim Jong-un.
Several anonymous sources have confirmed the allegations and one source said the workers face “terrible sufferings” as a result of the severe pressure.
Some workers have responded by writing graffiti on several production signs, with comments such as ‘drug troops’ and ‘Pyongyang speed is drug speed’.
The graffiti is being treated as a political crime, and Radio Free Asia reports that police officers are already searching for the perpetrators, with residents required to provide handwriting samples to prove their innocence.
Investigators have issued a public warning, saying workers will be severely punished for any further incidents. The majority of the Pyongyang project is forecast for completion this autumn.
