A new public awareness campaign designed to encourage householders to minimise the risk of mould in their homes has been launched by national trade body The Property Care Association (PCA).
‘The Big Air Out – It’s good to vent’ is a week-long initiative highlighting the importance of effective household ventilation in managing moisture, reducing condensation and helping prevent mould growth.
From Monday 26 October to Sunday 1 November, the PCA will be sharing daily videos offering bite-size practical advice on home ventilation, from opening windows and using extractor fans to maintaining airflow and understanding the relationship between heating and moisture.
Paul Walker is Technical Manager at the PCA. He said: “There are some simple habits that can help reduce moisture-related problems in homes, which is really important for the people living in them.
“Mould growth can be detrimental to health, while condensation or excess moisture can result in damage to furnishings and belongings, or affect the property itself.
“It’s good to vent, and The Big Air Out campaign is designed to help people recognise that ventilation is particularly important, even during the winter months when we naturally become more conscious of keeping homes warm and energy costs down.”
Three simple tips the PCA recommends for household ventilation include:
Always use an extractor fan if you have one
Dry clothes outside when possible
Close kitchen and bathroom doors when the rooms are in use.
Paul Walker added: “Good ventilation doesn't mean leaving your windows open all day or losing valuable heat. It's about finding simple, effective ways to let fresh air in and excess moisture out.
“Approaching ventilation in the right way can help ensure your home stays warm and dry as well as improving indoor air quality.
“However, it’s also important to recognise that not all moisture problems are caused by poor ventilation, and persistent issues may require professional advice from a PCA member who specialises in damp and mould.”
