Power On has been awarded the full multi-utilities connections contract for an exciting new riverside development by Taylor Wimpey. The contract includes the district heating and hot water system and associated energy centre for 530 high-rise apartments and 1,500sqm of commercial space in Poplar, next to the River Lea.

The Rivermark development began construction early this year, with completion due in 2027. Power On has been contracted by Taylor Wimpey to design, build and adopt the multi-utility networks. Heating and hot water for the development will be supplied from an energy centre located in block F. This will provide low temperature hot water (LTHW) for space heating and domestic hot water (DHW) via a district heating network.

A complete Energy System

The complete Energy System will comprise roof-mounted Air Source Heat Pump (ASHP) plant and supplementary electric boiler plant. In addition to the Energy Centre in Block F, there will be a heat substation within Block B, serving this block as well as Blocks A, C and G.

Design and build scope

The district heating system works will include not only the energy centre but also mains distribution pipework, which will run internally within the development. There will be underground pipework running between Blocks A and B, and branch pipework from the mains into each Block. Power On will deliver service connections to each individual residence and commercial unit and provide all domestic heating interface units.

Sustainability focus

Rivermark has been designed with sustainable living at its core—featuring solar panels, biodiverse brown roofs, and car-free living. Power On is supporting this by using the latest models of ASHPs in the market, offering increased efficiency and decreased power requirements and associated electrical infrastructure. A decarbonised concept solution has been provided with almost 94% contribution from ASHPs.

Joe Mariani, Senior Commercial Manager at Taylor Wimpey London, said: “Power On was able to provide the design excellence and dynamic solutions that we needed for this prestigious and environmentally focused development. Having just one company and one point of contact for the whole multi-utility project benefits us in efficiency, time and cost.”

Neil Fitzsimons, Managing Director of Power On commented: “The Rivermark development is an exciting opportunity to showcase our skills in district heating and hot water for mixed-use, high-rise developments that are complex in nature. These are our forte at Power On.”
