Chapel is one of just five developments across the UK to claim the accolade. Backed by CABE, the government and the housing industry, the award is the national standard for design quality in new housing.
Persimmon’s flagship development of 174 apartments was credited with transforming a previous ‘no-go area’ into an area of regeneration, prompting investment in a new park and the refurbishment of a disused footbridge across rail tracks connecting to the town centre.
Wayne Hemingway, chair of Building for Life, said: “I don’t think we have seen a better development since we have been doing Building for Life.”
The Building for Life Standard represents the national standard for housing and neighbourhoods. It is awarded to new housing projects that demonstrate a commitment to high design standards and good place making. The aim is to reward builders of high quality new developments and increase awareness of the importance of good design and architecture and landscaping to the public buying new homes. By identifying great new housing schemes the organisation hope to explain to the house building industry why these designs work so well and how they can learn from them. By celebrating the best it can raise the standards of the rest.
Rob Allen, sales director for Persimmon’s South Coast region, comments: “At every development we strive for excellent designs and high quality architecture and always try giving something back to the community.”
Lindsay Todd, Chief Executive of Swaythling Housing Society, said: "We are proud to have played a lead role in this major development and regeneration project and we are delighted to receive this national award from CABE. The Chapel scheme shows our commitment to delivering energy efficient, innovative homes, and feedback from residents tells us that it is a place in which people want to live."
Situated between Southampton waterfront and the town centre, Chapel is an exciting development of apartments, duplexes and townhouses. Phases one and two are now complete, with phase three scheduled to launch later in June.
