The ALEP Autumn Conference, held in partnership with Kerry London and supported by News on the Block, is taking place on Tuesday 22 October 2013 at The Royal College of Surgeons, 35-43 Lincoln's Inn Fields, London WC2A 3PE. The event will be hosted by ALEP’s Honorary President, Damian Greenish of Pemberton Greenish LLP.
ALEP is committed to promoting excellence within the enfranchisement sector. This conference will explore the challenges of appearing at tribunals, including first-hand insight from Her Honour Hazel Marshall QC about how evidence is presented and the difficulties of combining the roles of advocate and expert. An interactive panel discussion led by Ellodie Gibbons, Barrister and Mark Loveday, Property Chamber Judge, will then focus on the introduction and effect on the enfranchisement sector of the new First-tier Tribunal of the Property Chamber. After a refreshment break, Head of Communications at The Bar Council, Toby Craig, will explore the impact of social media on traditional marketing practices and its role in personal career development. Tom Jefferies, Barrister, Landmark Chambers, and always a popular speaker at ALEP conferences, will round off the conference with a look at the important enfranchisement decisions of the year to date.
Expert witnesses - the truth, the whole truth…!
Her Honour Hazel Marshall QC will deliver the keynote presentation - a frank and fascinating review of tips, tricks and traps in giving expert evidence. Have you ever wondered how your expert evidence may be going down behind the inscrutable gaze of a judge or tribunal? Here is your chance to find out. Hazel Marshall will give you an insight from her experience, latterly on the Circuit Bench, into what is likely to impress, and – perhaps even more importantly – what may, even inadvertently, undermine the weight of such evidence. She will also discuss the duality of the functions of advocate and expert, and how the challenges of attempting to fulfil both roles may possibly be met.
Practice and Procedure in the new First-tier Tribunal of the Property Chamber
On 1 July 2013 the functions of the LVT were transferred to the First-tier Tribunal of the Property Chamber, the procedure of which isnow governed by the Tribunal Procedure (First-tier Tribunal) (Property Chamber) Rules 2013. This panel session, led by Ellodie Gibbons, Barrister, Tanfield Chambers and Mark Loveday, Barrister, Tanfield Chambers and Property Chamber Judge, will discuss the introduction and effect of the new rules and provide practical guidance on appearing before this new tribunal.
Is social media really worthwhile within professional services? – a presentation and discussion led by Toby Craig, Head of Communications, The Bar Council.
Enfranchisement case update – a detailed look at the most important decisions of the year to date and their impact on the enfranchisement sector by Tom Jefferies, Barrister, Landmark Chambers.
