Vincent Tchenguiz - The View From The Top

The Grand Master of residential property in the UK, Vincent Tchenguiz, talks to Nicolas Shulman about his Consensus Business Group, the environmental challenges in the industry and life at the top of the property ladder.

After completing his schooling in Tehran in 1973, Vincent attended Business Administration course at Boston University before obtaining a BSc Honours in Economics and a BSc in Commerce at McGill University, Montreal, in 1978.  Vincent also has a Masters Degree in Business Administration (MBA) from New York University, which he completed in 1980.

Prior to establishing Rotch Property Group and Consensus Business Group (CBG), Vincent worked for Prudential Bache in London as senior vice president within its fund management division, trading financial instruments.  In 1986 Vincent joined Shearson Lehman Brothers, London also as senior vice president in a similar role, trading financial instruments.  In 1988 Vincent and his brother Robert set up Rotch Property Group, now a £4bn commercial property business where he is joint chairman and joint managing director.  In 2001 Vincent established Consensus Business Group to focus on his business interests outside commercial property.

Can you give an overview of your business?

You’ve just touched on the international element. Do you think that property management industry is moving in the direction of international business?

MIPIM is the largest international property convention in the world. What does it contribute to your business and have you got plans to be there next year?

How did you get into the residential property business?

What advice, at the other end of the scale, would you give the small guy who’s just started, or thinking about getting into property management?

Don’t do it! Leave it to us.  You need to scale it up to be effective.  The only way we have been able to scale up into ownership and management is to contain the problems.

You’re getting well known for your advocacy of environmental issues. How does this integrate with your residential property business?
