Watling Consulting, the recently launched division of Watling Real Estate, has launched a major national survey into local government-owned property.

The research is being led by director and head of Watling Consulting Guy Brett.

He said: “We will be looking at how local government is navigating policy pressure, funding constraints and operational needs.

“We will be seeking to assess how property is being aligned with housing, economic development and regeneration goals both locally and regionally.”

The survey, entitled “Unlocking the Public Estate: How councils are navigating the policy pressure, funding constraints and operational need”, is intended to throw the spotlight on how local authorities are managing their property needs.

Brett said: “Well-managed local authority land and buildings are vital to delivering better places, stronger communities, effective public services, and financial sustainability.

“We are calling on all those who work in the sector to share their views to help us build a comprehensive report to government and sector bodies, making the case for renewed investment in the public estate.

“We believe it will help build a stronger case for local property capability and funding, and contribute to sharing of best practice, innovation and insight across councils.”

The findings will be unveiled at a webinar and in-person round table.

Brett added: “For too long, the strategic value of an efficiently functioning estate has gone unrecognised. We are sharing this survey to all in the local government property sector and saying this is your chance to add your voice to the national conversation.”
