From time to time you’ll have seen Anchor Door Systems vans either driving round London or on site and may wonder “hmm, interesting name, what do they do then…?” A few hours in the life of one of our chaps can help answer that one.

“The office buzzes into life at 0800 and on a Monday everyone attends the latest Health and Safety briefing, be it new developments or reinforcing reminders. This morning there are no emergencies to attend to, so I collect the allocated job sheets and look carefully at what’s required today to make sure I have all the necessary tools on board the van to tackle everything.

“First off I have an appointment with the managing agent and building manager at a substantial residential block nearby, looking at the feasibility of converting their doors to automatic operation. A lot of properties are upgrading in this way as it is very secure, helps conserve heat and makes the entrance accessible for both wheelchairs and prams. Installers need to be qualified to BS7036 and I am pleased to be able to advise the client accordingly! I can answer immediate questions about the most suitable type of installation, make recommendations and leave with plenty of information to be able to prepare a detailed quote in a couple of days. It is great to be able to talk requirements and practicalities with clients on site and look at the environment together.”

“The next call out is about a vehicle gate at a large residential development in Battersea. The managing agent wasn’t too sure what the problem was but on inspection during operation it seems as though the important safety edges have been corrupted - nibbled by foxes (strange what these creatures find appetizing). I replace the rubber edge and reset the gates, pleased to be leaving everything working perfectly.”

“All our vans are fitted with trackers so if an urgent call comes in to the office, colleagues there can see where we are and divert us immediately. I’m told that a roller shutter at a rear entrance on the King’s Road needs looking at and I set off, luckily traffic across the river is light. Roller shutters are very reliable but can sometimes be damaged by vehicles and it seems that is the case here as the curtain has buckled, which is a key sign that a large delivery lorry has misjudged somewhat. Following usual procedures from our method statement, I isolate the electricity and make adjustments to allow for manual operation so the site is safe and secure. I can order the required parts via the office and all will be back to normal shortly.”

“Lunchtime means a sandwich and sit down whilst I look at this afternoon’s job sheets. I’ll be looking at CCTV, video entry systems and some antique floor springs – interesting stuff – and it’s only Monday!”
