A landmark £1.5 billion regeneration project is set to transform Elephant and Castle in south London, with the creation of a brand-new town centre that includes 485 high-specification flats across three towers, alongside retail, leisure, and transport infrastructure.
The development—simply named The Elephant—is being delivered by build-to-rent specialists Get Living on the site of the former Elephant and Castle Shopping Centre, which closed in 2020. The new residential units are designed to bring high-quality, modern city living to one of London’s most historically significant neighbourhoods.
The 485 homes will be spread across three striking towers and marketed as premium rental apartments. They will sit above a new public town centre, complete with more than 50 shops, restaurants, bars, a cinema, and a new ticket hall for the London Underground. A vibrant new square and improved pedestrian links are also central to the masterplan.
Rick de Blaby, CEO of Get Living, said the redevelopment will "respect and honour the area’s heritage and bring to life the real spirit of the Elephant,” adding that the new homes and public realm will “reinvigorate one of London’s oldest meeting and shopping destinations."
The original Elephant and Castle statue, a local landmark, will also be reinstated within the new public space, symbolising the area’s rich history and cultural identity.
Beyond the flats and commercial offerings, the scheme includes a new campus for the University of the Arts London and collaborations with local institutions such as Corsica Studios to ensure creative and community uses are retained in the area.
Construction is progressing, with completion expected by 2026.
