This year’s Association of Residential Housing Manager’s (ARHM) Conference will be held at 1 Great George Street, London W1 on Wednesday 6 December.
There is an excellent line up of speakers, including Baroness Elizabeth Andrews OBE, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State, DCLG, who will be the keynote speaker. She is leading the initiative for a cross-government strategy for older persons’ housing and will be speaking to the conference about what that strategy might include.
Other subjects that will be covered include:
Lease extensions
With some leases in the retirement sector now near or below 80 years remaining, the subject of lease extensions is becoming more relevant. Peter Haler, chief executive of the Leasehold Advisory Service (LEASE) will explain the valuation principles for lease extension and the legal rights of lessees to be granted them.
Understanding dementia
Dr Graham Stokes will speak on the subject of dementia. Dr Stokes specialises in dementia and his interests are in neuropsychology and the understanding and resolution of challenging behaviour in dementia. He has been instrumental in the development of person-centred approaches to care. He has written and co-edited several books and papers on the subject.
Disability Discrimination Act and residential premises
Two days before the conference – on 4th December – new laws on the handling of discrimination and residential premises come into force. They will change the way managers handle requests for changes to premises from disabled persons. Emma Davies, solicitor at Manches LLP will explain how the new laws will affect managers.
Assisted living and retirement village schemes
Two speakers, both active developers of these schemes, with strong views on what kind of schemes should be developed, how marketed, and what services should be provided.
Nick Sanderson is chief executive of Raven Audley Court plc. He created Audley Court in the early 1990s to develop assisted living projects. In 2004, he formed a partnership with Raven Mount plc to create a nationwide portfolio of schemes.
Jon Gooding became managing director of Retirement Villages Ltd in 2005. This company built and managed the first private retirement village in this country in the early 1980s and continues to develop, own and manage housing and care facilities for older people, He is a former director of Hercules Property Services, now part of the Erinaceous Group, and also is chair of Circle Anglia, one of the largest housing associations in the south of England.
