MetroPM, the national property management company with offices in Birmingham and Cheltenham, has taken the initiative to install defibrillators at a number of the sites it manages.
Managing director Matthew Arnold said it was a conscious decision by the board to create a community resource that could save lives.
“It’s not just older people that have heart attacks, we have seen young fit sportsmen such as the footballers Fabrice Muamba in March 2012 and Christian Eriksen during Euro 2022, have their lives saved on the pitch by almost instant medical attention.
“Whether it is a heart attack or problems with a fast or erratic heartbeat, the first few minutes can be vital, and we think that installing Automatic External Defibrillators (AED) is a good community support and helps awareness of vulnerable individuals and what can be done in those vital first few minutes,” he said.
AEDs can be used to revive someone from sudden cardiac arrest. This can manifest itself in a number of ways, for example, a dangerously fast heartbeat (ventricular tachycardia) or a fast and irregular heartbeat (ventricular fibrillation).
If prompt action is not taken, the end result can be death.
An AED can be used by a bystander in a public place to jolt the heart back to a normal rhythm and potentially save a life.
Together with cardiopulmonary resuscitation to keep the blood flowing to heart and brain, defibrillation can restore the heart’s normal rhythm.
Matthew Arnold added: “And this can provide a vital lifeline until paramedics arrive on the scene to take over – potentially saving lives that might have been lost.
“We believe this is an important resource and our clients have been unanimous in welcoming it.”
MetroPM operates nationally and is responsible for the management of apartment developments across England.
