A major blaze broke out on Wednesday evening in a five-storey block of flats on Maysoule Road in Battersea, prompting the evacuation of around 150 people and mobilising a large emergency response. The London Fire Brigade received the first calls at 19:08 BST and quickly sent crews from multiple nearby stations, including Battersea, Wandsworth, Fulham and Clapham, with a total of 15 fire engines and around 100 firefighters attending.
Firefighters in breathing apparatus evacuated residents from the building while crews deployed two 32-metre turntable ladders as water towers to attack the flames from height. A drone team was also used to give the Incident Commander enhanced situational awareness of the unfolding fire. The blaze destroyed large sections of the building’s upper structure, including the roof.
Fortunately, no injuries have been reported. Fire crews brought the fire under control by 23:01 BST, but remained on site overnight to damp down hot spots and prevent re-ignition. The London Fire Brigade’s Fire Investigation Team has been called in to determine the cause of the fire.
