Two MP’s have recently raised issues of leasehold inequity in Parliament. The high profile comments mirror concerns raised by Baroness Gardner in the House of Lords (see News on the Block, Issue 60). Sir Peter Bottomley MP, who was later praised by Barry Sheerman MP, referred to leasehold property ownership and going to the Leasehold Valuation Tribunal as “...legal torture...”. He continued:
“There are scandals that need exposing. We need publicity and better adoption of rules and guidance and, if necessary, the law—although I suspect that the registration of managing agents would do far more —so that many vulnerable and elderly people do not suffer.”
A Ministerial Statement is expected in September 2012, after Sir Peter said: “...we need change...so that there is a better outcome”.

Separately, John Cryer MP raised concerns that the Ministry of Defence had placed missiles on the rooftop of a block of flats in London to protect the Olympics. The residents previously failed to win an injunction at the High Court against the installation of a Ground Based Air Defence High Velocity Missile System.
Martin Howe, Partner at Howe and Co Solicitors, representing the residents, said: “The MOD never asked these ordinary British people for their permission to turn their homes into a missile launch base and never consulted with them over their fears that accidents may occur and about what will be done to protect them... Only a few months ago this...block was engulfed in flames. Disabled residents, children, men and women struggled to escape down smoke filled staircases in the dark of night.`’
Previously, residents at Bow Quarter, a nearby private block of flats had raised similar concerns about missiles being installed in their building.
