A major new online training programme has been launched to support the next generation of property managers adapting to remote and hybrid work. New Block Manager: Career Jumpstart is the creation of Joe Mallon MRICS FTPI, Managing Director of JFM Block & Estate Management and founder of The Block Coach, a new platform dedicated to improving professional development across the block and estate management sector.
“These days many property managers (or people who want to become property managers) spend long stretches working remotely,” says Joe. “That’s not to say their employers can’t support them with team sessions and mentoring, but those everyday learning moments in the office, the quick questions, the overheard advice - are often missing. What people need now is something deliberate to fill those gaps.”
The course combines structured video lessons with interactive exercises to create a more engaging online experience. One module lets learners complete a virtual block inspection, clicking on different parts of a building to learn their correct terminology and maintenance considerations. Another features a gamified Section 20 activity, where learners flip digital cards to test their knowledge of consultation notices and processes.
“We’ve worked hard to make the content feel alive,” Joe says. “These interactive tools help learners absorb knowledge in the same way they would through experience - by doing. It’s about taking the best of modern digital education and applying it to the realities of block management.”
Crucially, the Career Jumpstart course is designed to complement, not replace, the established qualification routes offered by TPI and RICS.
“My message is absolutely pro-qualification,” Joe explains. “The TPI and RICS frameworks are excellent, and this course is built to support them. It gives people a head start, whichever path they’re taking. I’m passionate about helping people go from new learners right through to becoming chartered surveyors if they want to go that far. I want to make sure there’s a clear journey from beginner to expert in this profession.”
That ambition comes as the UK government looks at introducing mandatory qualifications for property and block managers - a move welcomed by The Property Institute, which has called for new rules to mirror standards already in place in the social housing sector. A formal consultation has come to an end on the topic, and any future regulation could make recognised qualifications a requirement for practising managers. Joe believes that makes courses like Career Jumpstart even more important, helping professionals not only meet but exceed future expectations.
“When the new rules come in, (and I think they should), our learners will already be ahead of the curve,” he says. “This course is built to prepare people for that next era of professionalism.”
The launch comes at a time when online education is experiencing unprecedented growth. Globally, the e-learning market was valued at around USD 263 billion in 2023 and is expected to surpass USD 930 billion by 2032. In the UK, the online training and education sector is worth roughly £4–5 billion, with forecasts indicating strong double-digit growth over the coming years. Analysts attribute the surge to greater workplace flexibility, faster digital adoption, and the rising demand for accessible professional development.
Joe acknowledges that he is not alone in this space.
“There are one or two other providers doing great work, some focused on microlearning or blended formats - and I think that’s a really positive thing for the sector,” he says. “But I’d like to think what we’ve built here is among the most comprehensive and engaging courses currently available. It’s practical, it’s creative, and it’s built for the way people actually learn today.”
With its mix of expert-led videos, interactive tools, and real-world grounding, New Block Manager: Career Jumpstart aims to set a new standard for digital training in the property management profession. In these changing times it will be interesting to see how the industry reacts to these kinds of initiatives.
