Square Roots, a housing provider with a mission to supply top-quality, affordable homes in London, has extended its relationship with Kurve Technologies, delivered by Insite Energy, to maximise customer satisfaction and lower costs and emissions at a new 236 home development in the north of the capital.

In the heart of Barnet, the development, which was completed between August and December 2024, is part of a heat network that is supplied by 12 42 kilowatt (kW) air source heat pumps. According to modelling data conducted by Kurve Technologies on the assets installed, the heat pumps are estimated to be three times more efficient than the same heat network running on gas boilers.

Residents have been provided with the KURVE pay-as-you-go (KURVE PAYG) web-app, via which they can conveniently manage their energy account and monitor their household usage in real time from any location. KURVE PAYG has been shown to reduce energy bills by around 24% compared to those on traditional credit billing.

Barbara Richardson, Managing Director at Square Roots commented: “It’s essential we get the best value for money for our customers when procuring services on their behalf. KURVE’s high-tech, user-friendliness hits exactly the right spot, by helping customers manage costs and reduce their environmental impact without compromising on service.”

“A key competent of the Greater London Authority’s plan to align with, and in some cases, exceed requirements of the UK government’s anticipated Future Homes Standard, which is set to ban natural gas boilers in new homes, the London Plan prioritises schemes such as Square Roots Hendon, where heat via heat pumps is supplied via heat networks, particularly in new developments, to achieve net-zero carbon emissions,” said Jarrad Bedford, Head of Sales: Operations & Maintenance, at Insite Energy, which created Kurve Technologies with SAV Systems in 2019. “Emissions from this renewable installation will drop further as the proportion of the UK’s electricity supply that comes from renewable sources increases over time. Residents will be able to monitor energy use and expenditure on their phones, or other internet-connected device, in real time via the KURVE web-app. We look forward to continuing to work with Square Roots and its parent company, London Square, to offer these kinds of benefits at lots of other innovative new developments across the capital.”

The move to KURVE follows a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between London Square and KURVE’s founding partner SAV Systems, which designates SAV as Square Root Group Ltd’s preferred heat network supplier.

ESCo Manager services from Insite Energy, also a founding partner of KURVE, are included in the Square Roots Hendon contract. The services include heat network commissioning, system optimisation, maintenance and financial management.

An Energy Service Company (ESCo) is a commercial structure created specifically to produce, supply and manage the local delivery of decentralised energy to a ‘whole site’ development. Typical ESCo contracts last 10 to 25 years, the expected asset life of the energy centre, so the ESCo can recover its upfront investment. This long-term model can leave residents stuck with high costs and poor service. In contrast, Insite Energy’s ESCo Manager offers the same core services as traditional ESCos, such as operations, contract and financial management, but on a flexible, single-year contract and with a fixed, transparent service fee based on actual costs. It allows clients, like Square Roots, and its customers to stay in control of their heat network, while relying on experienced specialists to manage day-to-day operations and provide expert guidance.
