A serious incident at a block of flats in Cornwall has raised alarm among leaseholders and property managers.
Around 7 pm on Sunday, an external fire escape connected to a roof terrace collapsed, injuring four members of the same family. One woman sustained potentially life-changing injuries and remains hospitalised, while the other three—treated for minor injuries—have since been discharged.
Emergency services, including fire crews, ambulances, and an air ambulance, responded promptly. A scene guard remains in place and the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has launched an investigation. The affected building comprises ten apartments.
This tragic event serves as a stark warning for all leasehold stakeholders. It highlights the shared responsibility—from freeholders to leaseholders—to ensure communal areas, particularly escape routes and external structures, meet safety standards.
