1. Review security assessments, take a fresh look at what is needed
and make sure that adequate protection is in place. Ensure staff take even more
care in securing the building when they leave and take precautions such as putting
valuable items and portable IT equipment in a secure place in the building.
2. Regular inspections of empty buildings should be conducted; the
frequency depending upon circumstances and whether there is a history of
problems. The potential for liability claims from trespassers means it is important to
make and keep comprehensive records of all inspections and to rectify any damage as soon as possible.
3. Staff should also be encouraged to report any incidents, even
minor, so that they are aware of trends of increasing theft and vandalism.
4. In vacant properties remove combustible materials, disconnect
utilities and drain water systems.
5. If possible, in vacant properties, accessible windows and doors should
be boarded up with at least 18 mm plywood or steel security systems. If it is
impossible or impractical to board up the building, then fire and security alarms
should be maintained.
