The Property Institute (TPI) has welcomed the government's latest measures to improve transparency around service charges, giving leaseholders greater access to information and making it easier to challenge unreasonable costs.
The new proposals are intended to provide leaseholders with a clearer understanding of how their service charge contributions are spent, while strengthening their rights to request information and question costs where appropriate.
Responding to the announcement, TPI Chief Executive Officer Andrew Bulmer said the organisation supports the government's focus on transparency and will work with its members to help implement the changes across the sector.
He said: "Leaseholders have every right to understand what they are paying for and to challenge costs they believe are unreasonable. The measures announced by government will give them tools to do that, and TPI will work with its members to support their effective implementation across the sector.
"Greater transparency around service charges and stronger rights to access information are positive steps forward, giving leaseholders clearer insight into how their contributions are used to keep their homes and communities well maintained, well managed and safe."
Bulmer also reiterated TPI's call for the regulation of managing agents, saying transparency should be accompanied by consistent professional standards and accountability.
"We look forward to the government's response to the wider consultation, including proposals for mandatory qualifications for managing agents. Completing that picture is essential if leaseholders are to get the protection they deserve," he added.
